On the 2nd November 2022, the Office for National Statistics released detailed univariate data from the 2021 Census covering the theme of ‘Demography and Migration’.

This release includes three key areas of data:

• On Census Day, 21 March 2021, the size of the usual resident population in Hull was 267,010.
• The population of Hull grew by 10,604 (4.1%) since the last census in 2011, when the population was 256,406.
• This is lower than the overall growth for England (6.6%).
• In Hull, there were approximately 53,135 children and young people aged under 0 – 15 years (19.9%), 173,040 people aged 16 to 64 years (64.8%) and 40,827 people aged 65 years and over (15.3%).
• Compared to 2011, there has been an increase of 4,769 (9.9%) children aged under 16 years, an increase of 739 (0.4%) people aged 16 to 64 years, and an increase of 5,096 (14.3%) people aged 65 years and over.
• The median age in Hull in 2021 was 36. This is 4 years lower than the national median age.
• As of 2021, Hull has 3,730.1 residents per square kilometre.
• Compared to nationally, Hull has a larger proportion of its population in almost all single age groups below 40 years, but a lower proportion o of its population in almost all single age groups 40 years and above.
• Between 2011 and 2021 population growth was most prominent amongst 4 – 14 year olds, 28 – 37 year olds, 50 – 74 year olds, and 90 – 97 year olds.
• Conversely, population decline was most prominent amongst 0 – 3 year olds, 16 – 27 year olds, and 38 – 49 year olds.

• On Census Day, 21 March 2021, there were a total of 115,472 households in Hull.
• The number of households in Hull grew by 2,876 (2.6%) since the last census in 2011, when there were 112,596 households.
• This is lower than the overall growth in households for England (6.2%).
• In Hull, 67,916 (58.8%) of households were classed as deprived in at least one dimension.
• This is higher than the proportion nationally (51.6%) but a 9.3% reduction from 2011.
• At the time of the 2011 Census the average household size was 2.31 people, compared to 2.41 people nationally.
• 25,464 households in Hull (24.1%) were single person, non-pensioner households.
• This is higher than the proportion nationally (17.3%) but a 4.7% reduction from 2011.
• 21,276 households in Hull (18.4%) were all pensioner households.
• This is lower than the proportion nationally (22.0%) but an 8.1% increase from 2011.
• 33,128 households in Hull (28.7%) include dependent children.
• This is approximately in line with the proportion nationally (28.5%) but a 3.5% increase from 2011.
