USER GUIDES

We are currently working on producing video tutorials that will guide you step-by-step through the main functions and tools on the Hull Data Observatory.

Whilst we prepare these video tutorials you can find a series of user guides below:

Quick Ward Profiles

Use it when: you want a summary of a particular ward in Hull

A Quick Ward Profile is a summary across all the data themes on the Hull Data Observatory at ward level.

Quick Ward profiles can be accessed from the Homepage.

On the map, click the ward that you are interested in seeing a summary about, and the profile will load.

You can also search by postcode.

From the ward profile you can:

    • Export or print the report
    • Copy and paste charts into your own documents
    • Download the raw data tables
    • View the metadata

Data Themes

Use it when: you want to explore data on a specific theme; including data at small (LSOA) geographies

Data Themes are the topic areas covered on the Hull Data Observatory (e.g. Population, Crime and Community Safety, Deprivation etc.). You can find them listed under the ‘Data by Theme’ button on the toolbar or in the coloured boxes on the Homepage.

These typically include more detail, specific to that theme, than is included in the Quick Ward Profiles.

There are three key components to each Data Theme:

1. PROFILES: OVERVIEW AND LOCAL AREA PROFILES

Use it when: you want to generate a preformatted profile covering the key statistics within a specific theme

When you select a Data Theme you will automatically be presented with an Overview Profile for the whole of Hull.

If you would prefer to look at reports for smaller areas, you can select ‘Local Area Profiles’ at the top of the Data Theme page and generate a ward or LSOA level summary for that Data Theme.

From the Overview and Local Area Profiles you can:

    • Export or print the report
    • Copy and paste charts into your own documents
    • Download the raw data tables
    • View the metadata

2. MAPS

Use it when: you want to visualise geographical and temporal patterns at small geographies

As well as viewing the data as an Overview or Local Area Profile, most Data Themes also have a mapping function – which you can access by selecting ‘Map’ at the top of the Data Theme page.

The map allows users to display data from within the theme geographically.

Users can change the indicator and geography shown (e.g. wards. LSOA), the underlying  base map and the symbol levels shown on the map. Some maps also include a time slider to visualise time trends.

From the Map you can:

    • Export or print the maps
    • Copy and paste maps into your own documents
    • Download the raw data behind the maps

3. FURTHER RESOURCES

Use it when: you want to read / learn more about a particular Data Theme

Finally, each Data Theme includes a section of Further Resources.

Here you will find any additional documents or links, specific to that Data Theme, that you may find useful.

These Resources will be expanded as we develop the Hull Data Observatory.

Data Explorer

Use it when: you want to search for specific data, including data that isn’t available in the standard profiles and reports

Using the Data Explorer, you can search all 6,000 + indicators that are available through the Hull Data Observatory for specific data, including data that isn’t available in the standard profiles and reports.

To find the data you need you can use your own search terms or apply filters to focus in on data by theme, geography or publisher.

Once you have found the relevant indicators you can:

    • Explore their metadata
    • Display and download data tables for areas at your selected geographical level
    • Create and download maps and charts
    • Add indicators to your ‘favourites’
    • Share individual indicators and your ‘favourites’ list with colleagues

Custom Area Explorer

Use it when: you want to produce themed reports for your own bespoke geographical areas (e.g. a specific collection of LSOA or wards).

Using the Custom Area Reporter, you can produce themed reports for your own bespoke geographical areas (e.g. a specific collection of LSOA or wards).

These customised reports, wherever possible, have the same content as the themed reports that are available on the Hull Data Observatory at standard LSOA and ward level.

They work by aggregating figures up from the smaller constituent geographies.

Once you have created your own bespoke geography you can:

    • Generate thematic reports
    • Save, export, print and share these reports
    • Save your custom geography for future use
